It is not very often that a football player in his mid-thirties excites a fanbase of a particular club. However, Thiago Silva’s arrival on a free transfer to Chelsea created a lot of buzzes. The 36 years old was seen as the savior of Chelsea’s defensive fragilities.
Last season they conceded 54 goals in the Premier League. In the top ten teams in the table, last season no team had conceded more goals than the Blues. Thus they needed to strengthen at the back in the summer. They had already spent big on attackers in the transfer market.
On the defensive side, Thiago Silva was the only meaningful arrival. There were doubts about whether he could cope up with the high intensity of the Premier League at the age of 36. The Brazilian spent the majority of his career in Ligue 1 which not as competitive as the Premier League.
Silva’s debut was a horror show as he gave the ball for West Brom to score their second goal. The former AC Milan defender then pulled up his socks and gave solid performances against Crystal Palace and Sevilla. He continued his good form at Old Trafford as well.
The key Marcus Rashford moment for Thiago Silva
The Manchester United vs Chelsea game has been in news despite being a goalless draw. Both Ole Gunnar Solksjear and Frank Lampard preferred to be more defensive than usual. Chelsea started the game with a back three with Silva at the heart of it.
However, in the latter half of the game, the Red Devils did try to create chances. In the second half, there was a moment when Marcus Rashford found himself in space isolated with Thiago Silva. The United forward is young and very fast as well.
Frank Lampard and Chelsea fans watching the game must be wondering what would happen if Rashford goes past Silva. After all, he is quicker than the Brazilian. However, Silva used his experience and did not allow Rashford to get the better of him in a one on one situation.
The Englishman tried to get his shot away but Silva held him very well. After that, he was joined by other Chelsea defenders and Rashford’s threat was completely Nuffield.
What’s next for Chelsea and Thiago Silva
Frank Lampard managed to solve one tactical problem but in the process, another one has been created. Earlier Chelsea was shipping in a lot of goals but they were scoring on the other end as well. Now things have reversed for them.
In the past two games, they haven’t conceded any goal but they haven’t’ been able to score any. Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have only shown flashes of their potential. While Hakim Ziyech is yet to play for full ninety minutes.
Christian Pulisic is yet to rediscover his last season form as well. The cold treatment of Fikayo Tomori, Antonio Rudiger, and Callum Hudson Odoi has also been questioned by fans. Tammy Abraham will also be knocking on Lampard’s door due as Timo Werner hasn’t been convincing enough.
As for Thiago Silva, he is likely to be rested for Chelsea’s next game against Krasnodar in the Champions League away from home. He should return to face Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday. Frank Lampard will be hopeful that Silva is able to maintain his form and fitness over the course of the season.
