Arsenal was beaten 1-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad in a tight affair between the sides. Arteta’s men did nothing wrong but they were outsmarted by City’s class. Raheem Sterling was the only scorer of the game.
Mikel Arteta decided to bench summer recruit Thomas Partey for this clash. The Ghanaian debut came in the 83rd minute. There was less time for Partey to offer anything at that point in the game.
It was quite obvious that Arteta wanted to play him safe for his first game in such a heavyweight clash. However, it is well known what Partey will provide once he gets the run in the starting eleven for Arsenal.
Partey made the switch from Atletico Madrid once his release clause was triggered on the deadline day. Arsenal seemed to have lost the race on the midfielder after multiple bids were rejected. Although, they pulled it off late.
Thomas Partey father confirms Chelsea interest
Two other clubs were in the mix to land Thomas Partey. His father confirms one of them as Chelsea, their London rivals. The Blue half of the city were also taking their chances for him in the transfer window.
Speaking to MyJoyOnline, Partey’s father Jacob said: “We were aware of the other teams that were interested. Juventus Chelsea and so forth. From that minute, we started to dance to ‘Party after Party’.”
Frank Lampard’s side boasted some rich talents in the midfield. N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mason Mount, and Mateo Kovacic created the middle of the park. Even they have young prospect Billy Gilmour and several other productive players on loan.
However, N’Golo Kante’s fitness and lack of a true deep-lying midfield creator were missing in the dressing room. Hence, Chelsea went for Partey but they missed him to Arsenal.
Partey in for the party
The Gunners have received sheer class and quality in Thomas. He is surely worth the money if he finds the rhythm to play in the Premier League. It is expected that the 27-year-old will make Arsenal a commanding force.
Mikel Arteta didn’t opt to start him against Manchester City. Arsenal played their usual game by making themselves defensively solid and hitting on the break. They lost the game but positivity remains.
Now, Partey’s addition to the squad is giving the license for Arteta to field a more attacking standard on the pitch. Thomas’s holding role with passing ability will drive attackers forward rather than sit and defend.
If Arteta finds the right position to utilize him, Arsenal won’t look back. Partey’s addition might not make them title contenders just yet but will surely pave the way for the same in the future. Then there will be a party in the Emirates.
