Toby Alderweireld has picked Paris Saint-Germain and Argentine superstar Lionel Messi over Manchester United and Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo as the better player.
Both Messi and Ronaldo are widely regarded as two of the best footballers ever. The duo dominated the footballing world more than a decade and they still continue to play at the highest level.
Messi plays for Paris Saint-Germain and the Argentine has looked back to his best after an underwhelming 21/22 season at the French outfit.
Ronaldo sealed a sensational return to Manchester United in the summer of 2021 and currently plies his trade for the Old Trafford-outfit. The Portuguese superstar, though, has not had a good start to the 22/23 season.
Alderweireld picks Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo
“Yeah, I played against Ronaldo many times. Of course, his numbers don’t lie, but Messi was the best, because he is simply elusive. You can’t get hold of him,” Alderweireld said.
He also said Messi does things faster than you do and that you can’t get a grip on the Argentine. He said: “You can’t get a grip on him. Everything he does, he does it just that little faster than you. He does this, then he does that, it goes so fast. I really had a feeling I couldn’t do anything against him.”
Meanwhile, Messi has had a great start to the 22/23 season. Messi joined PSG in the summer of 2021 and had endured a rather underwhelming first season at the club.
But Messi has registered impressive numbers already this season. The 35-year-old has featured in 12 games for the French side so far this season. He has scored seven goals from those appearances.
Messi has also registered an impressive tally of eight assists. Seven of those assists came in the Ligue 1, while he also assisted one of PSG’s goals in the Champions League 22/23 campaign.
Meanwhile, the same cannot be said of Ronaldo, who has seemingly lost his place in the Man Utd starting XI. Ronaldo has featured in eight games for Man Utd this season, but only three have been as a starter.
Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Man Utd’s recent match in the Premier League as they faced local rivals Man City. The Portuguese watched on from the stands as Man Utd fell to a heavy 6-3 defeat to the defending Premier League champions.
