Tottenham Hotspur: Eric Dier came out to be a top performer in England’s miserable UEFA Nations League journey.
Former Spurs player Michael Dawson praised Dier for his brilliant leadership skills.
After returning to the England National squad, the stopper featured in both Nations League games.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender made England’s World Cup squad in 2018 in Russia. Back then, the Three Lions managed to reach the semi-finals before losing to World Cup runner-up Croatia.
Tottenham Hotspur: Michael Dawson’s Comments on Dier’s Performance
Former Tottenham and Hull City defender, Michael Dawson said on the club’s website: “He’s captain material, 100 percent, and you don’t always have to wear the armband for that.”
Dawson also told how the current Tottenham squad has helped Dier to grow, as he said: “You have leaders throughout that squad – Hugo is club captain, Harry is England captain, Pierre, Sonny is captain of South Korea – and Eric is one of those players.”
The former England International has observed the player and thinks that Dier has grown “with age, that maturity, experience”.
Ledley King on Dier’s England Return
In that interview, another Tottenham Legend Ledley King also spoke about the England defender, as he said: “I’m delighted he’s back in. I’ve looked out for the squads over the last couple of years and been hoping to see Eric back in there, especially with his form last season.”
The former defenders also agreed on how Conte’s tactics have helped him to grow more as a defender than a defensive midfielder.
Garth Southgate Comparing Dier with Rashford
England Boss Gareth Southgate did not shy away to mention the Tottenham defender. He compared him with another National squad absent star Marcus Rashford.
During his post-match press conference, England’s manager spoke: “We would be foolish not to keep an open mind to especially players that have worked with us before, who we know and know us and can slot in pretty comfortably. The way Eric Dier has played across the two games is a really good example of that. He didn’t need the adaptation, he fits in with the group immediately.”
It is true that Dier is very familiar and comfortable with the 3 man defense. His club manager Antonio Conte uses the same formation for Tottenham’s Premier League fixture. In the Tottenham interview, Ledley King also pointed out that similarity.
As Harry Maguire struggling with the form for Manchester United and England, Eric Dier’s return to England squad has given new hope to England supporters. His consistent performance and past experience of playing under Southgate will make him an obvious choice for the 26-man squad of the Qatar World Cup 2022.
