The Italian manager thinks that the player is lacking confidence, but he will get back to his top form and overcome his goal drought.
The Spurs player has had a poor start in the new season and also failed to shine in the 2-0 loss away against Sporting Lisbon. Son is remaining goalless for straight eight games.
The Spurs No.7 was the joint Golden Boot winner with Salah in the last English Premier League season. He scored 23 goals but unfortunately missed PFA’s Premier League Team of the Year.
Tottenham Hotspur News: Conte’s Comments on Son
Spurs boss gave some hints of dropping South Korean International from the starting line-up against struggling Leicester. The player is currently out of form, and Conte has also acknowledged that.
The Italian boss said: “I think Sonny, for sure, is not happy because he’s not scoring. It’s normal and I like that he’s a bit angry with this situation because it means that he wants to try to change it, also because we need (him).”
He also added: “We are talking about Sonny and he’s a really important player for us. At the same time, it can happen, especially when you play massive games, you can be a bit tired mentally, also your body, so it can happen.”
Conte also assured the fans that there is no problem with the 30 years old. As he said: “But I repeat Sonny for me would be never, never a problem. We are talking about one of the best two players that we have in our team.”
The former Chelsea manager also indicated that he could drop his star players sometimes for the busy fixtures and fitness issues. He said: “For sure it can happen that in some games he can’t play from the start, like Harry (Kane) also. But only to protect him, to give the possibility to rest, to take care of his energy, and to bring us to win.”
Conte Defends Sonny
Son was last dropped from the first XI back in 2020 against Bournemouth. Despite being fully fit, he started from the bench in that game.
The former Leverkusen man is as important as Kane and reached the 20-goal mark in each of the last two campaigns.
Conte also defended his lack of form and assured: “When you score a lot of goals, the following season is more difficult because you are not an underdog, but are starting like you are the first top scorer up there with Mohamed Salah.”
The Italian boss has also explained his star player’s lack of confidence: “But when you don’t (score), for sure the confidence goes a bit down. At the same time, I think a strong player copes with this situation, faces this situation… and overcomes this situation.”
Conte was always clear about his relationship with Sonny; he said: “And again I repeat – Sonny has a lot of credit with me, with his teammates, with the fans, and with the whole environment. For this reason, Sonny for me will never be a problem.”
Tottenham Hotspur News: Son’s Hattrick Against Leicester
Despite such talks with Conte in the pre-match interview, Heung Min Son came from the bench and won the match ball by scoring three goals against Leicester City. Spurs are now second on the Premier League table with the same point as Manchester City.
