Mikel Arteta’s side had a chance to extend their advantage on both the Spurs and United when they took the field against Crystal Palace on Monday. But the intensity of Palace’s game seems to have taken Arsenal by surprise.
The Gunners were not able to complete key passes and also struggled to create big chances. Crystal Palace on the other hand were ruthless in attack and made the most of their opportunities.
Goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta, Jordan Ayew, and Wilfried Zaha were enough to give Crystal Palace a comfortable win over Arsenal. The loss has now dented the Gunners’ hopes of finishing in the top four positions in the Premier League.
Arsenal News: Will Tottenham Hotspur pip Arsenal and Manchester United to finish in the top four?
Arsenal were the favourties to finish in the fourth position. But their loss to Crystal Palace has opened the door for Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Owing to this, Wayne Rooney now believes that the Spurs have the advantage over the Gunners.
Tottenham Hotspur won 5-1 against Newcastle United on the weekend. The Spurs displayed a proper team effort as they eased past the Tyneside club to secure the fourth spot.
Manchester United on the other hand also dropped points on the weekend. The Red Devils drew 1-1 against Leicester City. Owing to this, they have slipped to 7th place in the Premier League table.
Owing to this, Wayne Rooney is now backing Tottenham Hotspur over their top-four rivals. Though Arsenal have a game in hand, the Derby County manager believes that the Antonio Conte factor would be a huge advantage to the Spurs!
As per the Daily Mail, Wayne Rooney said, “I think it’s Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur, between the two of them. I look at Manchester United’s form of late and I don’t think they’re going to challenge for it. The Spurs have got the experience in the squad hence I give them the upper hand.”
All three clubs have been knocked out of other competitions. Hence they will provide their undivided attention for their Premier League games. Hence it has to be seen who finishes fourth at the end of the season.
Destiny still in the Gunners’ hands
Yes, Arsenal suffered a huge setback against Crystal Palace. But their top-four destiny is still in their hands. The Gunners have a game in hand over their rivals and they will also be playing both United and the Spurs in the coming days.
Arsenal are scheduled to face off against Manchester United on 23rd April. Whereas their rescheduled Premier League game would be against Tottenham Hotspur on 12th May. Hence these games could determine who finished in the fourth position in the Premier League this season.
