It is not every day that you get to chase your life-long dream and play at an elite level of football. But, such is the story of two 18-year olds from the beautiful valleys of Kashmir. Basit Ahmed and Mohammed Asrar Rehbar have been signed on by a third division professional Spanish club, Sociedad Deportiva Lenense Proinastur. This makes them the first two players from the valley to ever play in an elite European league.

In order to engage the youth in the politically unstable and war mongered area, a special committee was formed by the Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF) whose focus was to scout footballing talent from across the Kashmir Valley in a bid to salvage the youth from the highly sensitive region. A contract had been signed with  Sociedad Deportiva Lenense Proinastur and the paramilitary force as part of the talent drive it undertook. Ahmed and Rohbar are the two players picked out by this committee.

Speaking to the PTI, a senior official said, “The club has agreed to take on contract the two players in the January window. This is the first time that any Indian player will be playing for the Spanish club.”

While Ahmed is the strong, imposing centre-forward, Rohbar is the speedy attacking winger. The pair has amassed valuable experience playing in a number of tournaments across the country. Both Ahmed and Rohbar have appeared in junior nationals, with the latter even featuring in the Santosh Trophy and Durand Cup.

All the players vying for the spot were put to test in the form of a series of gruelling trial sessions organised by the CRPF committee in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir Football Club. The duo passed with flying colours and ultimately chosen by the committee from a crop of hundreds of aspiring footballers. As per the terms of the contract signed by the CRPF and the Spanish club, the duo will have their contracts picked up by this January transfer window and all expenses of the 2 youngsters will be paid by the club itself.
