Chelsea will be facing FC Porto in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night. The London Blues won the first leg comprehensively with a 2-0 victory and have a healthy lead going into the game.
But most importantly for Chelsea is the fact that they have two away goals on a technicality. Given that the matches are being played in a neutral venue, the first match was a simulated Chelsea away game. So FC Porto has a tough task at hand.
Mason Mount was in fantastic touch the last night and proved to be the main man for Chelsea. He single-handedly created the first goal with a lovely turn to leave behind the defender and then finished emphatically.
Ben Chilwell was the other goalscorer for Chelsea. Robbing Jesus Corona of the ball, Ben Chilwell ran through on goal before rounding up the goalkeeper and finishing off from close quarters. The all-important second goal cushion.
However, we must also acknowledge the fact that Eduoard Mendy was made to work throughout the match. Porto definitely had chances to score but just wasn’t clinical enough. Striker Marega had a golden opportunity but Mendy denied him.
FC Porto will need to go all out against Chelsea FC because they need to score a minimum of three goals to win. Chelsea are unbeaten in the UEFA Champions League this season (P9 W7 D2 L0). Since Liverpool in 2017/18 wherein they went unbeaten in 11 games, Chelsea could be the second English team to remain unbeaten in 10 UCL games.
Thomas Tuchel has a fully fit squad at his disposal. Midfielder N’golo Kante is fit once again and ready for selection. Centre-back Thiago Silva could return as well.
“We need to be careful about him. The question is whether we want him to start or finish the game. It is not answered yet, I will do this tomorrow.”
However, it seems like FC Porto will not have the services of their leading goalscorer Serge Oliviera. Manager Conceicao isn’t ready to take any risks regarding Oliviera’s injury at the moment.
“We will see tomorrow,” said Conceicao. “As you know, the last match as I can say, he was not yet ready for the 90 minutes because of a small muscle problem and it is always dangerous.”
CHELSEA – Eduoard Mendy, Cesar Azpillecueta, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Matteo Kovacic, N’golo Kante, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Hakim Ziyech.
PORTO – Agustin Marchesin, Wilson Manafa, Pepe, Diogo Leite, Zaidu Sanusi, Matues Uribe, Jesus Corona, Sergio Oliviera, Luis Diaz, Mehdi Taremi, Toni Martinez.
FULL-TIME PREDICTION- Chelsea 2: 1 FC Porto
FC Porto could have returning stars in their line up but the way Chelsea are currently playing under Thomas Tuchel, they do look good. Moreover, their defensive record is extremely compact and it will be difficult for Porto to score.
