UEFA Nations League: Leon Goretzka and Manuel Neuer out of Germany squad due to Covid-19

UEFA Nations Cup: Germany will be without their captain Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka during their latest set of international games.

The Die Nationalmannschaft are scheduled to play Hungary and England in the UEFA Nations League during this international break. Their unavailability will be a massive blow for manager Hansi Flick going into the fixtures.

The Central European nation is currently second in the Nations League group, one point behind leaders Hungary. They will look to register victories in both games to secure their place in the next round of the competition.

Julian Brandt will also miss the game after leaving the team hotel with flu-like symptoms. He was also tested for the virus but his report came as negative

The German Football Association confirmed earlier this week that Manuel Neuer and Leon Goretzka will miss their upcoming set of fixtures due to Covid-19.

Both players have already left the team hotel and will isolate themselves from their respective homes. Hansi Flick has already called up Oliver Baumann to replace Neuer, while Maximilian Arnold will join the team as a replacement for Goretzka.

The two players are understood to have contracted the virus while at the Oktoberfest Beer Festival with the rest of their Bayern Munich teammates on Sunday. This is the second time Neuer has contracted the virus. He also came in contact with COVID-19 when the virus outbreaks in the Bavarians squad in January.

England manager Gareth Southgate has added Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson to replace Kalvin Phillips in the Three Lions UEFA Nations League squad. Phillips recently picked up a shoulder injury whilst at Manchester City and will undergo surgery in the coming days. He is unlikely to return to full fitness before the FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on Phillips’ injury, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said (via Sports Illustrated): “I don’t know (how long he will be out) I’m not a doctor – but in a good way he can arrive for the World Cup.

The doctor said the only solution right now is to do what he has to do. Now it will be not long but a little bit longer.”
