Unai Emery ‘close’ to sealing £18m January signing

The Gunners boss is in verge of reuniting with his former employee.

It seems things are getting tougher for Arsenal and Unai Emery. First Lille put up the tag of €80m secondly Henrik  Mkhitaryan is out till February and puts further void in Arsenal’s wings. The injuries to Rob Holding, Hector Bellerin and Shkodran Mustafi has put Arsenal in a look for a defender. It seems Unai Emery and Arsenal are close to signing this player.

Arsenal are “close” to sealing a deal for Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega. That is according to transfer guru Tancredi Palmeri, who believes the Gunners are set to stump up a €20m (£18m) fee for the Argentina international’s signature. Palmeri wrote on Twitter: “Banega close to Arsenal for 20m €.” The 30-year-old was a key member of Emery’s squad at Sevilla, winning back-to-back Europa League titles in 2015 and 2016. Reports in Spain last month suggested Banega’s agent was in London thrashing out a deal. Banega is available for €20m due to a release clause in his contract.

Arsenal are unlikely to spend big this month, despite being in contention for a top-four finish. Ian Wright has urged Arsenal to give Emery the money he needs to strengthen his squad. The Sevilla midfielder’s agent is believed to be in London. And they are ready to thrash out a deal to reunite his client with his former boss Unai Emery. The Gunners are keen to add experience to their ranks and are in the market for a new midfielder as they prepare for Aaron Ramsey’s exit at the end of the season. Banega is now in his second spell with Sevilla, having played for the likes of Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.

The Gunners boss sees the Argentine as the perfect candidate to fill the boots of Ramsey. The Welshman has agreed a move to Juventus.

Author’s Take:

It’s interesting to see Arsenal making a move for Banega. Given the fact that they want a defender, arrival of Banega before the arrival of a defender will certainly raise eye brows. Also the Gunners have a history of signing young players and players in their prime and given Banega’s age the move looks irrational.
