Nicolas Pepe is adapting to life at Emirates and this is what Emery told the winger.
Arsenal had a wonderful summer signing and some of it was shocking too. Nicolas Pepe, the Ligue 1 breakout star has been sent a message by Unai Emery to learn to deal with the pressure of being an Arsenal player. Nicolas Pepe made a move from Lille in August and since then is struggling to adapt to tough life at Arsenal.
Since his move to Arsenal in the Summer, the 24-year-old has struggled to make any crafty impact at the Emirates. He also admitted that he was lacked confidence even before his nightmare display at Old Trafford on Monday where he gave away the ball 17 times.
Coming with a big reputation and also huge transfer fee. The Ivorian coast international was criticized for his failure in making no mark at Old Trafford. Since making a move to North London he has only managed a goal and one assist so far.
Now for the Thursday’s Europa League tie with Standard Liege, Unai Emery will be sending the changed team with Mesut Ozil set to start.
The Spaniard understands that the £72million club-record signing needs time to adapt and has asked Pepe not to put himself under too much pressure because of his price tag. He is also ready to give Pepe the extra time to find his best form which saw him collect 23 goals last season which earned him the move from Ligue 1 to Premier League.
Unai Emery said,
“They are human, every player. We are playing every time, as a coach or a player, under pressure.
Under pressure is positive. Being under pressure is because we are at a big club with a very demanding objective.
It’s a privilege to be here. The players are here because they deserve to be here and they are privileged to be here. It’s not relevant for us to speak about money.
The players are not thinking about the salary or what one club paid to use him. I am not thinking about my salary when I am the coach. For us, it’s natural to play under pressure.
I am sure that Pepe is an amazing player, I am sure he is going to have a big career here but he needs time. A lot of players when they came here, the first month, the first year is not easy for them.
He still needs to play, get confidence, know progressively better the other players, our work. I think he is progressing.
I want to feel not just me loves this competition. I want to feel everybody loves this competition because it is another competition we want to do something with our supporters and it is one way to the Champions League.”
When asked if Ozil will be leaving the club in January, Emery replied:
“He is our player now.”
Unai Emery has a tough decision to make when it comes to setting up the formation now that he has a lot of wingers with him including the Aubameyang, Lacazette, and Pepe.
Pepe is one of the best wingers in Europe right now and this is attributed to all that he’s capable of. Indeed, he made a big move to a very different environment, a bigger team and a better team than Lille with a better line-up. He is not the only attacker in the squad unlike in Lille where the entire attacking mechanism was built around him. Right now, all he needs is little time and little support to bring back his original form at the Emirates
