Valverde On Messi and Barcelona

Ernesto Valverde’s interview Mundo Deportivo as he discusses Messi’s injury and Barcelona’s last match

FC Barcelona had a very solid 2018-2019 season as the club finished league top last season. The also faced a fair share of backlash when they exited the UEFA Champions League in the two-legged  Semi Finale against Liverpool. Liverpool outplayed Barcelona in the second leg defeating them 4-3 on aggregate.

Barcelona is trying its best to land some of the best players around to make their squad as strong as they can. Barcelona signed some top players this summer transfer like  Atletico’s centerman Antoine Griezmann for £108 million, Valencia’s goalkeeper Neto for £23.40 million and Ajax’s Frenkie De Jong for £67.50 million.

Ernesto Valverde has made a lot of changes in the Blaugrana Squad since his arrival. The recent selling of Malcom is one of them.
Valverde has some clear statements to make for Vidal and Coutinho, he said, “Coutinho and Vidal? They arrived late because of their participation at the Copa America and have to get back in shape. Last year, Coutinho and Vidal were important to the team, but now there is more competition and they have to fight harder to get a jersey.”

Ernesto Valverde Interview with Mundo Deportivo

Barcelona thumped Napoli 4-0 in their final pre-season game which somewhat eased the pain of Messi’s absence.
Luis Suarez scored twice in the match and  Ousmane Dembele also scored a goal. The match was special for Antoine Griezmann as he scored his first goal for Barcelona.

Valverde On Messi

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde has spoken on the injury of Lionel Messi, who is set to miss Barcelona’s first LaLiga Santander match of the season against Athletic Club on August 16.

After the victory when Valverde was asked about the Argentinian he said, “I would love it if Messi was on holiday, but he’s injured. I wish we could have him here and count on him for Friday [against Athletic Club] but it’s difficult to see.”
He further added,” He’s in the recovery process and I don’t know if he will be ready for the start of La Liga.”

Valverde on team performance and Frenkie de Jong

While no Messi is a blow for Barcelona, Valverde was pleased by his side’s performance against Napoli.“We played well and with intensity. The game was good, and we created goals”, Valverde continued, “The balance between defense and attack was good.”

Frenkie de Jong who played brilliantly in the Barcelona midfield against Napoli was praised by Ernesto Valverde. He said, “I have the same plan for him as I have for the others, There are a lot of players who can operate in central midfield. Today [ against Napoli ] he [Frenkie de Jong] has shown he is a great player. He can play in any position and that will be apparent. I think we made a great signing.”

Valverde On Greizmann

Ernesto Valverde was directly asked about Griezmann’s input in the match, Valverde said, “Goal scorers are always boosted by the chances they get, my goals. It’s good for them to have a good relationship with the goal. He had clear chances to score earlier, too. I am happy that all the forwards scored, including him, above all because he gives us a lot in attack with his movement. It’s positive to see how he’s playing.”
