Ernesto Valverde’s surprising opinion on Barcelona winning a treble

Barcelona might be in a good position in La Liga, Cope del Rey and Champions League but Blaugrana boss Ernesto Valverde believes that talk of a treble looks premature at the moment.

The Spanish Giants have completed treble two times in the last decade, first under Pep Guardiola in 2008/09 and second under Luis Enrique in 2014/15. Repeating this incredible feat looks possible this season given Barcelona’s impressive form in all the competitions.

Barcelona Are Alive In Every Competition And Are Striving Hard To Win The Title.

Barcelona is already running away with the league title this term after having won 18 games out of 22 games they have played this season. The Catalans are also the clear favourites to win the Copa del Rey this season after having qualified for the finals by winning 3-0 against Valencia on Thursday.

Philippe Coutinho, who joined Barcelona from Liverpool for a club record €160 Million in January, had been on the pitch against Valencia less than three minutes when he scored, while Ivan Rakitic stretched the visitors lead eight minutes from the stoppage time. Thanks to both of them as Barcelona reached the King’s Cup final for a record fifth year in a row on Thursday.

With the final not taking place until April 21, Barcelona can now turn their attention to other competitions, starting with the La Liga and then the Champions League. However, despite impressive runs across all the competition, the prospect of winning treble isn’t something which has entered Valverde’s mind yet. Blaugrana’s manager believes that they should take one step at a time.

Speaking ahead is Sunday’s clash with Getafe, Valverde said: “People can have a lot of hopes for many things, it is good that they do, we like that, but we’re professionals. It’s a question of mathematical sequences. When you have got none, you can get one. When you have got one, you can get two. When you have got two, you can get three. At the moment we need to get one!”

Barcelona narrowly escaped defeat in the Catalan derby away to Espanyol last weekend and will look to extend their unbeaten record in La Liga as they face Getafe at Camp Nou on Sunday. Valverde is quite worried about the game despite Getafe failing to win on any of their last 12 visits.

When quizzed about Sunday’s clash with Getafe, Valverde said: “I have spoken about this game before it is a difficult one, the game against them early this season was the first game we were behind. They are a team who let in few goals away from home, a dangerous team to play against.”

“We only played on Thursday, so we have not had much time to prepare, we need to get ideas on this and put the cup final out of our minds. This is the kind of game that is difficult for us. We’re coming into a decisive part of the season where titles are decided, we need to get through these games and people need to understand how hard they can be.”

The Blaugrana boss admitted that players should be mentally prepared for a tough fight from visitors. Valverde added: “We need to reactivate ourselves for that game, it’s an important game. We want to maintain our lead against our direct rivals, we are playing at home so want to make sure of three points.”

Author’s Take-

I completely agree with Valverde had to say. It’s all about the mathematical sequence, so fans need to calm down a bit. While speaking about Sunday’s game, it’s not going to be that easy for Barça to win in this fixture. The players need to reactivate themselves for the game as this kind of fixtures are title-deciding fixtures and nobody wants to take a risk at this point of the season.
