Virat Kohli needs to take a break from cricket : Brad Haddin

Australian wicket keeper believes Kohli needs to take a break from the game

Brad Haddin wrote in his recent column for ESPNcricinfo.com that Virat Kohli should take a short break from the game. These comments came on the back of the recently culminated Australia’s tour of India. The series was filled with controversies as well as unnecessary player confrontations. The captains of both the teams were in the thick of things as most controversies involved either of the two. Kohli also suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out of the fourth test. Ajinkya Rahane was the acting captain in the final match of the series. Haddin praised Rahane’s calm demeanour. He said that his attitude was a polar opposite to that of Virat Kohli.

Major statements from Brad Haddin’s column

  • “At the end of this long and successful home season, I get the distinct impression that Kohli needs some time to think about how he goes about things as a batsman and as a captain.”
  • He also said that the fact Virat Kohli might miss the beginning of this IPL season which “may be a good thing.”
  • “Time away from playing might help Kohli to reach a fairer point on what has transpired over the past six weeks.”
  • “Ajinkya Rahane, the stand-in captain, is as different from Kohli in his demeanour on the field as it is possible to be.”
  • “The way he [Ajinkya Rahane] was able to work with Indian fast bowlers, particularly Umesh Yadav, showed good sense and strong character.”

Inference from Haddin’s article

In the recently concluded test series, Kohli was involved in controversies just like he was in his younger days. Kohli is a hot-headed character. The fact that he was not able to score runs this series may have very well added to the fire. He will definitely miss a few matches for RCB and will use that time to contemplate what went on against Australia would be a great idea. Virat is a phenomenal batsman, that was never in doubt but his behaviour still needs some fine tuning. As mentioned by Haddin, Rahane is Kohli’s polar opposite. A talented batsman in his own sense, Rahane is very much like Rahul Dravid, another man who let his bat do the talking for him. Whatever might be the case we just hope that Kohli returns to the game in good spirits and exchange his words for little more runs.
