The Reds took a big risk by making the Dutchman the world’s most expensive defender but he hasn’t looked back.
Van Dijk has played 40 games for Liverpool since joining, conceding 36 goals and keeping 20 clean sheets. Given the issues which had dogged the Reds prior to his arrival, it represents a significant improvement. This season, he has led a backline which has conceded just five goals in 13 Premier League games, Liverpool’s best ever start to a league campaign defensively. The Reds once went through an entire season shipping just 16 goals. The defender has been the missing piece that Liverpool were looking for years. Van Djik is helping his club side as they look to win the Premier League and Champions League. The Dutchman speaks up on the suprising stint of his Liverpool career and whom did he vote for the PFA player of the season.
In conversation with Sky Sports News, Van Dijk admitted that to be contesting the Champions League final in his first few months of his Liverpool stint took him by surprise. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been nothing short of sensational since joining the Anfield outfit from fellow Premier League outfit Southampton last year. Within a few months, the Dutchman took part in the Champions League final, and this term he has been instrumental in the Reds’ Premier League title bid. Nonetheless, the 27-year-old stated he knew Liverpool were the club for him given the atmosphere and infrastructure, and is eager to kick on in pursuit of major silverware. Van Djik said, “The feeling straight away was that this was the club for me. I could definitely feel it, with the players we have here, the manager and the fans around the club. I definitely felt that we could challenge for trophies. I came last winter and to already be in the final of the Champions League was a bit of a surprise for myself but it was something that I really wanted to happen… [now] we have another team in the league that is playing pretty well and it’s a bit crazy with the amount of points we both have that one of us is still not even champions.”
Virgil van Dijk has voted for Raheem Sterling for the PFA player of the year award. The Liverpool defender is among the favourites to land the accolade following an outstanding campaign but opted for the former Liverpool winger Sterling, who could be his closest challenger for the honour. Van Dijk said, “I voted for Raheem Sterling. I did what I thought and I thought he deserves it. He’s had a fantastic season.I think he has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it.”
It looks like Van Djik’s been enjoying his time at Liverpool. The Dutchmen believes he can land trophies for Liverpool in future and has shown humility by praising Raheem Sterling.
