Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar pull off a no-look six on Nathan Lyon’s bowling, which stunned fans and players at the Gabba Stadium. Sundar played a crucial 62 runs inning to help India close the gap in the first inning to just 33 runs off Aussies. It was a well-deserved performance for the 21-year-old bowler, who was playing for the first time in a test match for India.
Indian batsmen failed to convert their short innings to the big ones on the third day of the last match of this test series. Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Mayank Agrawal looked solid but failed to score big runs. Then all-rounder Sundar and pacer Shardul Thakur played an important partnership to save India from an embarrassing first inning.
Australian fast bowler Josh Hazelwood clean bowled Mohamed Siraj to end India’s first inning at 336/10 at 112th over. Hazlewood was the hero of the match on the third day with another 5 wickets in an inning. But Washington Sundar stole the show with his no-look six, which will be fitted in Indian Fan’s memories for a long time.
Interestingly, Sundar clean bowled Nathon Lyon in their first inning, and also finished his bowling figure with three wickets including in-form Steven Smith.
Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur Break 30-Year Old Record:
Washington Sundar was a backup option for the Australia test series. He was called up for training session bowling. Well settled all-rounders Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were a star in the last match but injured, unavailable to play for the final match of this series, maybe a series-deciding fixture.
Sundar, regular in T20 line-ups for India, made his debut with 3 big wickets and an economy rate below 3.0 in the first inning. When batting, he entered the pitch under pressure, as India kept losing wickets in short successions on the third day. He and Thakur(67 runs in 115 balls) played a big role with a big partnership.
Sundar and Shardul had a 123 run partnership for the seventh wicket. It was a record-breaking partnership for India at Gabba stadium. They broke the 30-years old record of Kapil Dev and Manoj Prabhakar at Gabba Stadium.
Surprisingly Shardul was also playing in his first test match after injuries to pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohamed Shami. Same as Sundar, Shardul grabbed 3 wickets in the first inning and played a crucial role to keep the match on for India.
Indian Trailing 33 runs in the first inning and Australia are on 21/0 at the end of the third day. India missed a few overs at the end of the second day due to rain but have no complaints on the third day as it was a good performance from bowlers with both bat and ball.
This Series is on 1-1 draw right now so the remaining two days of this fixture will be fierce. This series has been tough for Indians as they playing with almost 11 players injured and star player Virat Kohli missing the last three matches due to paternity leave.
This series saw everything, racial abuse from Australian fans towards Mohamed Siraj, Rahane’s brilliance with century and his leadership skills will be talking points for the days to come. But Washington Sundar’ no-look six will be the icing on the cake if India manage to win this series.
