WATCH: Andre Russell bumps into Quinton De Kock after conceding 21 runs against him in his first over

Andre Russell bumped into Quinton de Kock after the Mumbai Indians opener smashed him for 21 runs in his first over for Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday.

It was not Andre Russell’s day at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai as his team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) failed to qualify for the playoffs after a 9 wicket loss against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Sunday. Coming in to bat at number 5, Russell failed to deliver with the bat and was dismissed for a golden duck by Lasith Malinga who surprised him with a well directed short delivery. Russell’s misery did not end just there as he was taken to the cleaners by Mumbai Indians opener Quinton de Kock when he came out to bowl.

De Kock smashed Russell for two sixes and a boundary as Mumbai Indians raced to 39 for no loss in just 4 overs. The West Indies all-rounder ended up leaking 21 runs in his first over with Kolkata Knight Riders defending just 133 in a must-win match. Russell however did not take the thrashing in a light mood as he fired in a wide throw at the non-striker’s end when de Kock came down the track to take a single off Sandeep Warrier’s fourth delivery in the very next over.

It didn’t just stop there as Russell went on to nudge shoulders with de Kock and gave him a cold stare after running into him. There were no apologies from the West Indian all rounder for his act either. Quinton de Kock, however, decided to ignored Russell’s act, giving him an exasperated look thus making sure that the situation did not get any worse. Mumbai Indians were off to a steady start in their chase of 134 runs with just 18 runs on the board in the first three overs before de Kock took on Russell and escalated the chase.

“It was just a bit of fun out there. Think he was a bit angry as I took him on,” De Kock was quoted as saying to IPLT20.com after MI’s thumping nine-wicket victory over the Men in Gold and Purple.

De Kock (30) was dismissed on the very first ball after the powerplay with wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik taking a brilliant running catch off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna. Rohit Sharma (55*) however played a captain’s knock stitching an unbeaten 88 run stand for the second wicket with Suryakumar Yadav (46*) as Mumbai chased down the 134 run target with ease thus finishing with 18 points from their 14 games level with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) but with a better net run rate taking them to the top of the table. KKR, meanwhile, missed out on a playoffs spot for the first time in three years.
