Ashton Turner has had a disastrous start to his Indian Premier League (IPL) career for Rajasthan Royals. Earlier this week, he became the first player in T20 history to register five ducks in a row after he was dismissed for three consecutive first-ball ducks in the IPL. He registered his first duck against Kings XI Punjab when he came out in a precarious situation. With the Royals needing 53 from 22 balls, Turner holed out on the very first delivery from Murugan Ashwin.
In his second game against Mumbai Indians, he walked out with 15 runs needed from 14 balls. The situation was ideal for him to spend some time in the middle and boost his confidence. However, Jasprit Bumrah trapped him plumb in front of the wickets on the very first ball. In his third outing against Delhi Capitals, he took strike with 21 balls remaining. He had the license to go all out with the bat but was totally deceived by the slower one from Ishant Sharma and ended up handing a regulation catch to Sherfane Rutherford at cover.
Before the IPL, he had recorded ducks in his last two T20 innings as well. His previous two ducks came in a match in the Big Bash League playing for Perth Scorchers and a T20I against India. It was a complete anticlimax for the West Australian batsman who made his IPL debut in the same venue where he had belted the Indian bowlers all around the park to score a match winning 43 ball 84 which saw the Australian team chase down a total of 358 in a remarkable manner.
Turner finally managed to end the run drought in T20s on Saturday in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday. Royals were just 13 runs short in pursuit of 161 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Turner managed to flick the first ball bowled into his pads into the vacant leg side region and scamper through for a single. Hilarious scenes broke out on the ground as soon as he had completed the run. Turner had a broad smile on his face while running the single.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was bowling the 18th over also had a huge smile on his face, having known what Turner had been going through in a nightmarish fortnight. The camera soon focused towards the Royals dugout where each and every member of the team was seen applauding Turner for opening his account in the IPL. Turner eventually remained unbeaten on 3 off 7 balls as Royals chased down the target with 7 wickets in hand and five balls to spare.
