David Warner and Manish Pandey ripped apart the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowling attack at the Chepauk on Tuesday before MS Dhoni’s lightning-quick work behind the stumps sent the left-hander packing. On the sluggish track in Chennai, where the spinners have ruled so far in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019, Warner and Pandey proved their mettle as they piled on runs with ease against the CSK bowlers.
The hosts locked horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday in a blockbuster clash with both teams looking to move closer to a playoffs berth. CSK skipper Dhoni won the toss and invited SRH to bat first. It looked like the decision will prove to be a masterclass when the Orange Ary lost in-form opener Jonny Bairstow on a duck in the second over off Harbhajan Singh but Warner and Pandey ensured SRH roared back into the game with half-centuries each.
After Bairstow’s departure, Warner and Pandey steered the ship for SRH and tonked the CSK bowlers all around the park making it look easy to score on the difficult track. Warner was beaten on the off-side by Harbhajan in the 14th over as failed to connect his swing and was caught short of the crease by Dhoni, who was quick to get rid of the bails. The CSK skipper showed amazing reflexes as he sent the left-hander back in the hut to bring his side back in the contest.
Warner departed after scoring 57 off 45 balls as he continued his purple patch this season. He bailed his team out perfectly after a disastrous start and set the platform for a big total along with Pandey, who also looked in sublime touch. He scored an unbeaten 83 off 49 balls to power SRH to a strong total of 175/3 in 20 overs.
