Virat Kohli’s stunning catch in the first innings of the second T20 international between India and South Africa in Mohali had the cricketing fraternity stand up and take notice but just a couple of hours later David Miller’s sensational effort stunned the Indian captain himself. Miller took a superb one-handed diving catch to send back Shikhar Dhawan in the 12th over of India’s run chase at the PCA stadium.
Tabraiz Shamsi’s fourth delivery saw Dhawan coming down the track and smashing the ball towards the long-on fence. Just as it seemed there was no stopping the ball, Miller flung himself to his right and plucked the ball out of thin air. Dhawan had a wry smile on his face after getting dismissed but Kohli’s reaction was pure gold, as he could not believe what he just saw.
Kohli himself took a superb one-handed catch during South Africa’s innings to send back skipper Quinton de Kock, who was flaying the Indian bowlers to all parts of the ground after the Proteas were put into bat. De Kock had hit his 3rd fifty in T20Is and was batting on 52 when he tried to hit a length ball from fast bowler Navdeep Saini over the midwicket region.
However, he failed to middle it and the ball went in the air over the bowler’s head as Kohli, who was stationed at mid-off started to run towards his left. As the ball started to die down, Kohli dived with both his hands outstretched and managed to hold on to it with his left-hand.
The stunning catch lifted the spirits of the Indian team and also the huge crowd which had assembled at the ground to watch their favourite stars in action. De Kock’s wicket opened the floodgates as the Proteas kept losing batsmen at regular intervals to eventually end up with a below-par score of 149 for 5.
Deepak Chahar picked up 2 wickets for India while Navdeep Saini, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya grabbed one each. India in reply, rode on Kohli’s unbeaten 72 and Shikhar Dhawan’s 31-ball 40 to chase down the total with 7 wickets in hand and take an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The third and final match will be played at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru on September 22.
