WATCH: KL Rahul kicks the ball in frustration after being castled by Trent Boult

KL Rahul had a big opportunity to seal his spot in the playing eleven for the upcoming World Cup when he came out to bat at number four in the ongoing warm-up game against New Zealand at the Kennington Oval on Saturday. Rahul came into bat after Trent Boult had removed both openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan cheaply. Rahul however failed to capitalise on the opportunity and could last just 10 deliveries before becoming Boult’s third victim.

Rahul struck a fine boundary in his tally of six but didn’t last long enough to make it count on a surface which was tailor made for batting despite the hint of early movement. Boult bowled a back of length delivery on the third ball of the sixth over and Rahul tried his best to keep it down but could only manage a thick inside edge as the ball rolled onto the stumps to disturb the timber. Rahul was furious with himself after the dismissal and was seen kicking the ball before making his way back to the pavilion.

The worry for the number 4 spot continued as Rahul failed to leave a mark and had to depart after scoring just 6 runs from 10 balls. Rahul has been in fine form of late registering back to back fifties in the T20I series against Australia at home before finishing as the second highest run getter in the recently concluded 12th edition of the Indian Premier League with 593 runs. The right hander will be desperate to make his mark in the second warm-up game against Bangladesh on May 28 failing which would force the team management to try out some other player for the position.
