MS Dhoni has been regarded as one of the calmest heads in a cricket field over the years. Not just while batting or wicket-keeping, his ability to stay unperturbed by any situation, even as a captain, has been a hallmark of his career. The ongoing edition of the IPL however has witnessed a different version of ‘Captain Cool’ altogether with the former Indian skipper losing his calm on more than one occasion during the tournament itself.
MS Dhoni lost his bearings for the first time in this year’s IPL when he stormed onto the pitch to protest against an umpiring howler during the match against Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur earlier in the month. Captain Cool’s wrath was once again on display in the match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on Sunday. It all happened in the 17th over of the innings when Navdeep Saini was bowling.
MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja were the two batsmen at the crease for the Super Kings. It was a pacy short delivery from Saini, which hurried onto Dhoni as he went for the pull. The ball lobbed towards mid on and Dhoni initially took a couple of steps forward looking for the quick single before deciding against it. There was a loud call of no from the CSK skipper but Jadeja, who was off his blocks quickly, kept running in the same direction. Dhoni eventually turned his back towards the striker’s end and Jadeja was left stranded midway down the pitch, having nowhere to run.
Saini, who was also off his blocks pretty quickly, picked up the ball before calmly running down to the non striker’s end and knocking over the bails to effect the simplest of run outs. There was a furious reaction from Dhoni at the other end, who was absolutely livid with the fact that Jadeja had not responded to his early call and kept on running, leading to his own downfall. The situation for CSK worsened even more as they ended up losing their sixth wicket with just 108 runs on the board chasing 162.
