Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni has been one of the most calm and composed heads going around in Indian cricket. The 37 year old provided a glimpse of his extraordinary presence of mind during the first T20I against Australia by running two opposition batsmen out off a single delivery even though only one was given out in the end.
It was an excellent piece of thinking from the former Captain Cool to ensure that the batsman at the other end was run out in case his partner had managed to get back in time to avoid the run out. The incident occurred in the 16th over of the Australian innings when Peter Handscomb was on strike with Darcy Short at the other end.
Umesh Yadav bowled a fuller delivery drifting into the pads and Handscomb clipped it with ease into the leg side and set off for the run. The batsmen however decided to have a mid pitch handshake while making the second run creating all sorts of drama in the middle.
It was a really poor call from Handscomb for the second run to start with and the lack of understanding between the two batsmen after setting out for the run made it even more worse. Dhoni seized the opportunity at once and made no mistake in disturbing the stumps at the striker’s end catching Short a long way out of his crease.
Dhoni however was unsure of the whereabouts of the batsmen and threw the ball back at the bowler just as a matter of caution. He asked Umesh to dislodge the bails at the non striker’s end and the pacer obliged by taking a bail off. It was however the well set Darcy Short who had to make the long walk back to the pavilion after scoring a run a ball 37 with the visitors still needing 26 runs to win the game from 28 balls.
