Arsenal pulled a surprise after they managed to sign Thomas Partey on deadline day. The Atletico Madrid midfielder joined the club for £45 million. The Gunners fans are also very excited to see him play under Arteta. It is believed that he is the kind of a midfielder that Arsenal has needed for a long time.
With the arrival of Partey, many have also tipped Arsenal to secure a top-four finish. The Gunners haven’t played Champions League football for four consecutive years now. In this time they have also failed to win the Europa League as well.
During his time at Wanda Metropolitano, he would often initiate counter-attacks from deep for Diego Simone. The Ghanian was very good at line-breaking passes that stretch the space behind the opposition’s midfield. He is primarily a defensive midfielder but his offensive abilities can’t be underestimated.
He is likely to make his debut against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. The two teams met last season just after the restart of the Premier League. The Citizens won 3-0 but Arteta got one over his former boss in the FA Cup semi-final with a 2-0 win.
Why Pep Guardiola must stop Thomas
In Manchester City’s first two Premier League games, Guardiola opted for a two-man pivot of Rodri and Fernandinho. He is likely to do the same in order to stop Partey from running the show in the midfield.
Arteta is likely to play three in the midfield with Dani Ceballos, Granit Xhaka, and Partey. Xhaka will be the holding midfielders with Partey and Ceballos playing ahead of him. Thus now Arsenal has two players in Ceballos and Partey who can create chances for their forwards.
Thus the ball will be in City’s court to deny Partey the space he needs. Ceballos will look to exploit the space between the two holding midfielders and De Bruyne. Thus it would, in turn, open up space for Partey, who could target Fernandinho. In recent games, the Brazilian hasn’t been able to stop players from running in behind him.
Also if City plays a very high line the likes of Aubmeyang can definitely run in behind their defense. Though the likes of Laporte, Kyle Walker, and Ruben Dias will fancy themselves one on one it is still very risky.
Thomas Partey and the Arsenal team
Thomas Partey seems to be settling well at the club and his physical abilities will definitely help to settle in the Premier League. The Ghanian is very athletic and he is 6’1 inches tall. Partey’s arrival has lifted the mood around the club.
The Gunners were interested in him for almost a year. In the summer as well it looked like Arsenal would miss out on him. There have been jokes on the internet that in order to sign him Arsenal decided to part away with Gunnersaurus to raise funds, who has been the club’s mascot for 27 years old t
He also revealed that he is very happy to see club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stay put at the club. He described the former Dortmund forward as a great player to play with.
The Ghanian is now 27 years old and Arsenal fans are hopeful that they will enjoy his peak years at the club. The club seems to be going in the right direction under Mikel Arteta who has already won the FA Cup and Community Shield for the club.
