Chelsea hosted the Spurs in Premier League on Sunday night football. Both clubs needed these crucial points to enjoy the top spot in the table. However, both London sides failed to clinch the win at Stamford Bridge. Jose Mourinho started with his usual 4-2-3-1 while, Frank Lampard went with his 4-3-3 formation on Sunday. Spurs were aiming for all three points in their travel to Stamford bridge to gain the lead on the table.
The London clubs had their strong line-up amidst the injuries on both sides. Spurs had Welsh defender Joe Rodon and Eric Dier in the central defensive positions. While Sergio Reguilon and Aurier played as full-backs just behind Bergwijn and Son. Højbjerg and Sissoko were playing in their usual central defensive midfield positions with Ndombele in the central attacking midfield position.
On the other hand, Lampard fielded Tammy Abraham, Hakim Ziyech, and Timo Werner as his front three. The attacking options were in favor of the Blues. Harry Kane was the lone striker yet again for the Spurs, who had more pressure on his shoulders. Son, Kane, and Bergwijn combined well upfront to threaten Chelsea’s defense early in the first half. The Dutch winger tried to bend the ball received from Son, which went over the bar.
Within no time, Timo Werner managed to find the net with a curling strike but was later disallowed for offside. Both Chelsea and Tottenham were very quite til the first-half in the final third. The game was 0-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes with clear-cut opportunities on both ends.
Welsh defender Joe Rodon made some serious mistakes in the middle for Tottenham
Joe Rondon’s debut in Premier League
The second-half had equal chances as well after a goalless first-half. Jose Mourinho later introduced Lo Celso to replace the tiring legs of Tanguy Ndombele. Chilwell and James both were working hard on the flanks to break the deadlock. However, the ball wasn’t finding the net past Hugo Lloris. Hakim Ziyech tried his shot on goal via Chilwell’s cross but the ball went over the bar in vain.
Lampard did make a number of attacking changes in order to win the derby. The change also included Tammy Abraham, who wasn’t at his best against the Spurs. The English forward missed a number of clear-cut chances to put his side in the lead. He made way for the French striker Oliver Giroud with ten minutes in the clock for stoppages.
Joe Rondon had the opportunity to impress Jose Mourinho on his debut for the Londoners. The Welsh lad got his chance in the main eleven after Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld got injured. Joe Rodon arrived at Tottenham from Swansea City and he had a decent name for his performances in the Championship. The centre-back tried a back-pass to Hugo Lloris in the injury time. This paved way for Giroud to pounce and slot the ball past Lloris.
However, Giroud couldn’t make use of the opportunity Chelsea was waiting for. The tame strike of Giroud was well caught by Lloris without any hassle. Rondon’s mistake could’ve proved to be costly if Giroud had managed to put that ball into the net. Although, Mourinho was happy with the centre-back’s complete performance against Chelsea.
A full debut to remember for Joe Rodon
Jose Mourinho opened-up about Joe Rodon’s debut against Chelsea in Premier League to Sky Sports yesterday. He said: “It’s difficult, but he showed good personality. I want to analyse the game step-by-step with him, but from my fast analysis during the non-stop 90 minutes, I got one mistake that ended with an offside goal, and another one with a back-header to Hugo (Lloris) that found (Olivier) Giroud.”
“After that, he was solid, brave, comfortable, and that for me, is an important thing. You compare the two teams, and you look at the two centre-backs and you say, Thiago Silva coming from an amazing career at the highest level, and Joe Rodon coming from Swansea in the Championship. I have to be happy with the kid.”
This draw has put Jose’s Spurs at the top of the Premier League table just above Liverpool. The goal difference has helped the Spurs to enjoy the top spot at the moment. While Chelsea are enjoying the third position in the table. Tottenham will next host Gunners in the Premier League clash on Sunday after a Europa League game against LASK.
