Lionel Messi and Co. have qualified to the next round of the Champions League and are sitting on the top of the table in La Liga.
Spanish giants and defending La Liga champions FC Barcelona are set to offer a new contract to their Spanish international full-back Jordi Alba. The Spaniard has been playing a key role for the Catalans since he joined them from Valencia in 2012.
He has already won 4 La Liga titles and a Champions League donning FC Barcelona’s colours. The Spanish full-back is considered as one of the best full-backs in world football. The 29-year-old is known for his blistering pace down the flanks.
Now, reports in Gianluca Di Marzio suggest FC Barcelona are set to land a new offer which would see the Spaniard remain at the club at least until 2023. The new four-year contract would also see the Spanish international earn €9m a year.
Since joining in 2012, the full-back has already amassed 269 appearances for the Catalans and has scored 14 goals. This season, Alba has played 17 matches and has scored a goal and provided four assists.
According to Marca, Alba had, after the match Celta Vigo, said, “It doesn’t just depend on me, as it also depends on the club. When I signed for Barcelona, it wasn’t for money. I came here for the feeling and because it is my home. In the end, it’s not enough to say that I’m a great player, as actions also matter.”
Even though Alba is 29, he still has a few more years left in his prime footballing career. If Alba put pen to paper on this new contract, it will help FC Barcelona in their pursuit of European glories.
The defender has always been crucial and there is no denying he has a lot more to give for the club.
Author’s Take
If the aforesaid reports are to be believed and if Alba signs the new contract extension, it will be helpful to both parties. Alba has become one of the crucial players in the squad and his service will never weaken the squad, at least for now.
