Willian clarifies why he had a laugh with Guardiola post Chelsea defeat to Manchester City!

The Brazilian was spotted joking with Guardiola after his side was defeated 4-3 in penalties.

Man City ran out fortunate winners after the game went to penalties after 120 minutes of football. Chelsea’s players were understandably deflated after the loss. But when footage emerged of Willian sharing a laugh with Guardiola at full-time, fans from west London struggled to see the funny side. A clip of the pair joking went viral on social media, garnering a lot of attention from Chelsea supporters – and a host of them want the Brazilian sold after his Wembley behaviour. Willian clarifies why he had a laugh with Guardiola after the match.

For 115 minutes, the Carabao Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City was seriously lacking in talking points. That was until Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper had been struggling with what appeared to be a hamstring injury when Maurizio Sarri decided to bring on Willy Caballero. Considering Caballero was the penalty shootout hero for Manchester City in the League Cup final victory over Liverpool three years ago, there may well have been tactical reasons behind the switch as well.

But Kepa wasn’t having any of it and remained on the pitch for the penalties. He did make one save from Leroy Sane but he also allowed Sergio Aguero’s kick to squirm under his body as City reclaimed the trophy. As City celebrated their first trophy of the season cameras caught an exchange between City boss Pep Guardiola and Willian. The pair were in conversation and Willian was seen laughing with the Spaniard. Chelsea fans weren’t particularly happy with the Brazilian joking around seconds after his side had just lost in the cup final and they took to social media to criticise him. One fan even replied to his Instagram post calling him out by saying: “You didn’t look sad after the loss when you were having a laugh with Guardiola.”

And Willian felt the need to reply. He wrote back saying: “I just tried to be polite with him, as I try to be with all who talk to me.”

Author’s Take:

Well said, Willian. In truth, he didn’t do an awful lot wrong and was no doubt still devastated that Chelsea had just lost in the final. But you can also understand the reaction from Chelsea fans who were gutted after the heartbreak of the penalty shootout only to see only of their own players seemingly not quite so gutted. Willian was as sad as the rest of the Chelsea squad.
